“Otherwise the Same” at the Poetry Foundation

I was recently invited to contribute an essay on the topic of “untranslatability” to the Poetry Foundation’s “Poets on Translation” series. The result was “Otherwise the Same,” which reaches back to some things I wrote in 2012, in a preface to The FSG Book of 20th-Century Italian Poetry, but was also influenced by conversations we had in the MFA Translation Workshop I taught last semester and by some of the texts we read for that class, including Damion SearlsThe Philosophy of Translation and Daniel Hahn‘s Catching Fire — both of which I highly recommend.
